Doxapram is a respiratory stimulant that acts as an antagonist at K+ channels in isolated type 1 cells. In vitro, doxapram stimulates catecholamine release (preferentially dopamine) from carotid bodies. Additionally, this compound exhibits presynaptic facilatory action and postsynaptic inhibitory action at the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) during NMJ block.
