Description
Avibactam sodium is a diazabicyclooctane β-lactamase inhibitor. When avibactam is used in combination with ceftazidime, a β-lactam inhibitor, multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections may be effectively treated. Avibactam has a potent activity against Class A and Class C and also some Class D β-lactamases, and is most often used to restore the activity of ceftazidime. However, bacteria may also develop resistance to new combinations over time, and various combinations have been investigated including avibactam paired with other antibacterials such as aztreonam or metronidazole.
